“Powering Your Plate; A Renewable Farm Tour” is a comprehensive tour of six farms, two businesses, and one community incubator that use renewable energy and uphold social and environmental ideologies and practices in their agricultural business model. The tour, which is two days in length, begins at Central Rivers Farmshed (Farmshed) with a Solar Power HourSM hosted by Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA)—which explains the benefits of solar energy for your farm. This one-hour presentation discusses solar market trends, describes the basic components of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system, outlines the evaluation process for installing solar PV, and introduces incentive options and economic benefits.
Day one, participants will board a bus at Farmshed which will take them to three farms in Wood and Marathon counties. These farms are a mix of organic and conventional practices, growing crops ranging from vegetables to corn for silage and producing lamb, beef, and dairy.
Friday, May 20th – 12pm to 8:15pm (includes lunch and dinner)
•Farmshed (lunch)
•Cutler Country Comfort
•Sternweis Dairy
•Stoney Acres Farm (dinner)
The second day of the tour begins at MREA of their renewable energy systems on site. The farm tourists will then board a bus to visit three Portage county farms who are practicing organic techniques to grow vegetables, permaculture design combining small fruit production and grazing, and a business specializing in sustainable building construction. The second day of tours culminates at Central Waters Brewery, which uses photovoltaic, solar thermal, geothermal, water reclamation, and locally sourced ingredients in their beer production process.
Saturday, May 21st – 9am to 4:30pm (includes lunch and dinner)
•Midwest Renewable Energy Association (brunch)
•Whitefeather Organics
•The Sandbox
•Liberation Farmers (lunch)
•Central Waters Brewery (beer)
