About the Project
Growing business innovation in the local food economy.
The downtown garden center will be transformed into a model education and demonstration site that creates rich compost from local organic waste streams, maintains indoor and outdoor space and resources for growing plants, and manages a community kitchen for demonstrating seasonal food preparation and preservation processes.
Soil – Compost, vermicompost, and potting soil are valuable resources for food growers using organic practices. These materials can be made using simple processes and local resources, often diverting wastes from landfills. Proof of Concept: Growing Power
Food – There is opportunity to greatly expand the availability of local, healthy food. With simple methods and a small investment of time, people can greatly increase the amount of local food that is part of their diet. This is a key element to growing the local food economy. Much of this begins in the kitchen. Proof of Concept: The Stop
Energy – The sustainability of business and the communities that support them depend on the intelligent production and use of energy. With sound design and proven technologies, we can provide for our energy needs with renewable energy. Proof of Concept: Midwest Renewable Energy Association
Incubator – Tremendous potential exists for the growth of the local food market. This is good news for entrepreneurs. Access to training, resources, markets, and professional networks will facilitate the development and success of new businesses. Proof of Concept: Intervale Center
How do we make this happen?
To get this project “growing” we are launching a capital and awareness campaign to raise support from businesses, groups, individuals and volunteers to acquire and renovate the abandoned site and hire staff for program development.
