Compost Crew

Come Turn & Learn about Compost at Farmshed this Fall!

Farmshed’s Compost Crew

The Compost Crew is a group of passionate volunteers who work together to produce, maintain, and learn about compost at Farmshed throughout the year. The Compost Crew not only collects food waste from Farmshed’s Frozen Assets program but also from others in the community reducing the amount of waste going into landfills! Some partners that contribute compostable materials include Father Fats, El Jefe’s, and the Stevens Point Co-op. Volunteers join for 2-3 hours at the site once or twice a month to help keep the process moving. Any volunteer wishing to become more involved with the many opportunities this program has to offer can be trained according to their interests.

Previously managed by a long time volunteer, Guy Pledger, and Compost Intern, Lydia Campbell; he program is currently managed by the UWSP student, MarKatie Mealy who aims to educate the public on the benefits of composting.

The Compost Crew Needs Your Help!

Farmshed volunteers have been turning local scraps into quality compost for a few years and is seeking individuals who love to contribute to the community and the Earth while learning basic composting skills. Volunteers of the program help collect compost from local businesses, join together to maintain our compost piles and improve the site.

The compost program usually is full swing by June but has had a very slow summer due to the storm damage on site. As of recently, the compost area has been cleared of debris and the program is 100% ready to begin again. However, we are in desperate need of trained and untrained volunteers! There are a lot of fun opportunities to help out such as building & maintaining compost piles, collecting compost from local businesses, and providing education for school and volunteer groups.

If you are passionate about learning about reducing food waste in landfills while turning local scraps into quality compost and would like to volunteer with the Compost Crew, email MarKatie at compost@farmshed.org. Below are some upcoming opportunities to join in on the fun.
